A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Our core aim for initial teacher training is simple; to develop ambitious high quality teachers who guide all children and young people to reach their potential through a programme of research, critical analysis, practice and coaching.

QE School runs all its School Direct training from its beautiful campus in Wimborne built in 2011 which has unrivalled facilities.

School Direct programmes assess and develop both classroom teaching practice and your understanding of the pedagogy which underpins high quality teaching. Exeter University set the essays and online tasks that you have to complete. Whilst at school, you will be learning ‘on-the-job’ from day one what it means to be a teacher in your chosen subject area.

You visit the University just once during your training, the remainder of the time is spent in school whilst spending six additional seminar days with Exeter remotely. You are entitled to one day a week which is free to work in school on Exeter online assignments (called your ‘in-school University day’). You have a subject tutor, a mentor and a University tutor, all looking after you and guiding your progress, either at distance or in person every day.

Your carefully sequenced training programme incorporates a reduced timetable of teaching classes, delivering episodes (parts) of lessons, team teaching, observing others around the school, attending training led by experts at the school, coaching and guidance from a designated subject and reflective mentor, feedback sessions, marking and planning time. You will be encouraged to come to all the same meetings and CPD that full time teachers attend, providing a full understanding of the profession and role.

At QE School you will be led by Assistant Headteacher (Ben Jose) in addition to a designated, motivated and experienced ITT Coordinator (Sarah Owen) who facilitates bespoke training in all areas of your development as a teacher, helping you to improve quickly and receive support when needed.

School placements

Your placement will be at a local school. Many of our partner schools are also our feeder schools, but not all. These would be Middle Schools where you would teach years 6-8. In our partner secondary schools, you would teach years 7-11 and in some cases 7-13.

You will visit the schools ahead of your placement and build up a working relationship with the staff there helping you to settle quickly when your placement starts.

Most placements take place in the second half of the Spring Term after February half term.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

2:2 and above

Your degree subject should be in art and design or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

We are looking for applicants to have a genuine passion for teaching and for wanting to work with young people and help them to achieve their potential.

Teaching is a hard career - but incredibly rewarding. Before starting the course we want you to recognise the challenges you face not just in the training, but in the profession thereafter. We want you to recognise the challenges, but not be put off by them. We want to train you and you to stay in the profession long term to make a difference to young people’s lives and future prospects.

Other requirements

In addition to the academic requirements found on Exeter’s pages, selection is based on performance at interview, a satisfactory fitness to teach assessment and a satisfactory DBS enhanced disclosure.

Although not essential it would be an advantage to be able to reflect on any school-based experience or experience working with young people in another context.

About the training provider

Queen Elizabeth’s School is a heavily oversubscribed 13-18 mixed comprehensive school with an excellent local reputation for high quality teaching and learning and an innovative and forward looking approach to education. Interview process

At interview you will be welcomed by members of our senior team before receiving a full tour of the school, led by either a current trainee or one of our students.

You will be expected to teach a 30 minute lesson based on a lesson brief set by QE. This is a chance for us to observe your potential to train, the relationships you develop with students and also ability to lead students in a teaching task. We expect to see commitment and professionalism at this stage, not ‘the finished article’.

You will get to meet the department team and current trainees across the school, helping you to decide if we are the right place for you to train and vice versa. In our eyes, it genuinely is a two-way interview process.

There will be a formal interview with Assistant Headteacher (Ben Jose) and the Head of Department in the subject area to which you have applied. If Exeter have asked us to check subject knowledge at interview, there may be an additional written task in order that we may do this.

You will undergo a full DBS check and questions on your understanding of safeguarding and Exeter University Distance Learning model as part of the interview process.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK for the duration of this course, you may need to apply for a Student visa.

To do this, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Training with disabilities and other needs

For our students who have disabilities and other special needs we believe we offer outstanding support. We do the same for our trainees. Our facilities mean that the building is fully accessible on all levels, with lifts and ramps, and the site is open with wide corridors and pathways to support anyone with physical needs. We have many students in wheelchairs, we also have visually and hearing impaired students - each with us due to the fact that we have both the facilities and the staff/understanding to support their needs. On our School Direct course we have supported trainees with both disabilities and training needs, including many trainees who are dyslexic. They have all excelled with us and have commented positively on the support that was afforded to them.

The University of Exeter provides comprehensive student services that include AccessAbility and Wellbeing teams, Student Learning Skills Service, Student Advice Unit, Counselling Service, Students’ Union Advisors, Student Health Centre, Family Centre and the Chaplaincy.
