About the course

Learning in a classroom requires professionalism, organisation, planning, preparation and excellent subject knowledge, across the department. Trainees will experience lessons across all age and ability ranges within Geography, as well as a range of Humanities subjects in the first instance, reflecting the diverse needs of students in our schools. You will work alongside an experienced team of Geographers and the wider Humanities department, who have proven ability to ensure achievement for all students.

Titus Salt School is a large, oversubscribed comprehensive school with 1500 students, including 300 in the sixth form, based in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, Shipley, West Yorkshire.

The Geography department at Titus Salt School is a large department that has teachers with a wealth of experience and who are passionate about ensuring their students fulfil their potential. Trainees will gain experience of dynamic teaching within the classroom and will also have the opportunity to be involved in fieldtrips during their time at the lead school and in their placement schools. The Lead Tutor for Geography is extremely experienced, he has been Acting Head of Faculty, and has previously led the Geography department for many years. He also has extensive experience of exam marking for one of the main exam boards. Geography offers unique opportunities for students to improve their subject knowledge and understand their place in the world. It is a broad subject that allows students to develop their practical, analytical, creative, evaluative and problem-solving skills. Young people have a natural curiosity about the world around them, and excellent Geography teaching enables students to appreciate the varied and fantastic world in which we live. It is a subject that teaches about a variety of issues, ranging from a local to a global scale, which will set them up to achieve their very best. We are interested in finding teachers who can inspire, challenge and consistently enjoy working with young people in a way that encourages students to thrive in the world around them.

We train Geography teachers who are inspirational, and who are not afraid to take risks. Typically, our trainees enter the teaching profession well prepared for the rigours of being a Newly Qualified Teacher. Many acquire jobs in our partner schools where they have been on placement and quickly progress in the first few years of qualifying. Several of our current mentors are teachers who were previously trainees on this course.

Interview process

If you’re invited to an interview, you’ll receive an email from us that explains everything you need to know about your interview. This includes the date, time and the location, as well as what to prepare beforehand and what will happen on the day, so it’s really important to read this email very carefully. As well as having your invite sent by email, you will be notified through UCAS Track if you’ve been invited to an Interview Day.

Your interview will take place in one of the Leeds SCITT schools.

How school placements work

The first stage of your training is based predominantly in the lead school for your subject. This school has a specialism in your subject area and the lead tutors are subject experts who are also outstanding teachers and trainers. Each school has dedicated training areas so that your training consists of quality time with your tutors.

The initial training is focused on subject pedagogy;

  • How highly effective planning leads to successful outcomes in the classroom;
  • How you can ensure pupils make good progress in their learning;
  • How you can assess learning to inform next steps and strategies to support highly skilled differentiation.

You will be immersed in the school environment from week 1 and you will be seen as a professional by school staff, pupils and parents. This allows you to take the theory, thinking and research and see / implement this in the classroom, ensuring you develop your ‘teacher’ persona as quickly as possible.

The second stage of the course is a full-time placement in a partnership school with some core development days at your lead school and LTU. During this stage you will have a dedicated subject mentor who will observe you teach, support you with your planning and developing your subject knowledge for teaching. They will be your first port of call during this stage of training when you establish yourself in the classroom as the teacher.

The third stage of the course is a full-time placement in a contrasting partnership school, again with some core development

Finally, in the last two weeks of the training year, you will have the opportunity to undertake an enrichment and enhancement placement or experiences. What this looks like is entirely different for each trainee as this is a time to pursue an interest, an additional subject, working in a SEND school, organising out of school learning and many more options!


The course fees for 2020 – 2021 are as follows:

UK & EU Students: Leeds Trinity postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) tuition fees are £9,250 in 2019–20. Tuition fees may rise with inflation in future years.

You will not have to pay these fees upfront. Eligible UK and EU students can apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees from the government.

UK students on non-salaried places studying full-time can apply for a package of maintenance funding from the government to help with general living costs and additional funding if you have children and/or a disability.

Financial support

You could be eligible for either:

  • a scholarship of £17,000
  • a bursary of £15,000

To qualify for a scholarship you’ll need a degree of 2:1 or above in Geography or a related subject. For a bursary you’ll need a 2:2 or above in any subject.

You can’t claim both a bursary and a scholarship - you can only claim one.

An honours degree at a classification of 2:2 or above (if you are in your final year at University you should have a 2:2 or above as a predicted grade).

Your degree should be relevant to the subject of Geography but if your degree is not directly related to this subject, we will look at your A-level qualifications.

About the training provider

Trainees applying to St. Mary’s School Direct follow the Leeds SCITT course. St. Mary’s, Menston is currently the lead school for Mathematics and English with other schools in Leeds taking this role for other subjects. You may or may not be placed at St. Mary’s during the year. Leeds SCITT is one of the longest operating SCITTs in West Yorkshire with enviable employment rates.

Working in partnership with Leeds Trinity University, initial teacher training courses offer both QTS and a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6). PGCE students are registered to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7) and awards are from Leeds Trinity University.

All PGCE courses with Leeds SCITT are offered in the 11-16 age range with the opportunity to experience teaching at post-16 level.

As a Leeds SCITT trainee teacher, you will be immersed in the school environment from week one and you will be seen as a professional by school staff, pupils and parents. With your permission, they will share this plan with your personal tutor so that they know how to best support you during your training. They can also share this plan with the School Partnerships team, who are able to inform the host schools for your placements so they can discuss how to best support you during your school-based training.
