Course summary

United Teaching is an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) provider part of United Learning which is committed to bringing out the “best in everyone”. We work with primary and secondary schools nationwide, spanning the state and independent sectors, where you can draw upon the expertise of our vast network of teachers and leaders to become the best teacher you can be.

Our bespoke programme is designed to support you during your ITT and beyond. Surrounded by a team of specialist mentors, you will always have someone to turn to throughout your teaching journey. Engineers Teach Physics is a new course that has been tailored to support trainees with a background in engineering and material science. The course will focus on physics subject knowledge that engineers and materials science graduates are unlikely to have studied at undergraduate level.

The course is designed to bring out the best in your teaching skills quickly, professionally, and comprehensively. We aim to develop the teachers and education leaders of the future. Being part of United Teaching means you are not only learning how to develop students academically but how to develop their ‘character’ and broaden their horizons through our commitment to ‘Education with Character’, part of our Framework for Excellence.

Every trainee works to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but you can also work towards a PGCE with 60 Master’s level credits through our partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London. Goldsmiths have been training teachers since 1904 and are renowned as leaders in the field of teacher training.

Trainee development is overseen by our outstanding lead school, Paddington Academy, with regional training hubs across England from Carlisle to Bournemouth.

What do trainees and graduates say about our programme?

“In my past career I was bored. With United Teaching I learn something new every day, am pushed, am supported and for the first time ever I don’t dread Mondays!” – Eliza

“My professional and subject mentors have made me feel that they are both committed to my success and to improving my teaching practice. The level of support and training I’ve received has been outstanding. I feel fully at home at my school and appreciate all the opportunities I’ve been given to contribute to curriculum discussion.” – Emma

School placements

When you apply to us, you have the option to express a preference in where you would like to be placed if successful. As a national SCITT, we place trainees in a large number of schools across England. View our schools

During the assessment process, we will ask you about your flexibility in choice of location.  We endeavour to place you in your first choice of school. If this is not possible, we will seek alternatives close to your location that work for you.

We always seek to ensure minimum travel times for trainees between home and school.

Once you have secured an offer for your main placement school, you are guaranteed a minimum of 120 days’ school-based experience there. In addition, you will also take part in a 4-week second school placement.

How will I be inducted?

Before undertaking the course, you will be required to attend our Summer Institute which will be held in July 2023.

The Summer Institute is an intensive programme designed to prepare you to hit the ground running in September.  Sessions will be a mixture of online sessions and face-to-face contact with the United Teaching Team.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Your degree subject should be in engineering, materials science or a related subject, otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

If your degree is not engineering or a related subject, please apply to our physics course.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

Teaching is more than just a career – it is a vocation which leaves a tremendous legacy. It is a unique opportunity to be unashamedly passionate about your favourite subject, to develop and encourage aspirations in children and to lead with creativity and enthusiasm every step of the way.

Teaching changes lives.

So, who are we looking for?

Quite simply, somebody that:

  • never stops learning

  • actively seeks feedback

  • is never too proud to ask for help

  • has high expectations of themselves and their students

  • wants to be part of a school community

  • is an effective and compassionate communicator

Other requirements

  • Clear identity and DBS checks

  • A high level of numeracy and literacy

  • Good set of A level results including A or B grade in subject to be taught. BCC is lowest combination considered (each application is considered on individual merit and exceptions can be made to this if a candidate is exceptional in other areas)

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,000.

Tuition Fees for the PGCE are £9000. Tuition Fees for QTS route only are £6000. You may be eligible for financial support from Student Finance to fund tuition fees and other living costs. This would be subject to your personal circumstances.

About the training provider

United Teaching is the Initial Teacher Training scheme for United Learning. With over 80 primary and secondary schools nationwide, spanning the state and independent sectors, you can draw upon the expertise of our vast network of teachers and leaders to become the best teacher you can be.

Our bespoke programme is designed to support you during your training and beyond. Surrounded by a team of specialist mentors, you will always have someone to turn to throughout your teaching journey.

We offer real teaching exposure in a choice of schools, a mentor system, a support network, professional qualifications, as well as continuous professional development throughout the duration of your career with United Learning if you stay in the Group beyond your training year.

Every trainee works to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), but you can also work towards a PGCE with 60 Master’s level credits through our partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London.

Before undertaking the course, you will be required to attend our Summer Institute which will be held in July 2023. This is an intensive programme designed to prepare you to hit the ground running in September. Sessions will be a mixture of online sessions and face-to-face contact with the United Teaching team.

Please be aware that places on the salaried route are highly competitive and there are a limited number of places on our programme. Please email train@unitedteaching.org.uk if you would like further advice on routes available.

Interview process

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to attend our one-stage assessment process, which will be a Teams interview including a teaching task to a panel of two members of the United Teaching team.

Your offer will be conditional on you:

  • Gaining your degree qualification (if you are still at university)

  • Having GCSE Maths and English (and Science for primary education) or approved equivalency qualifications in these subject areas

  • Having clear identity and DBS checks

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
