PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
The course is a one year full-time course, which runs from September through to July, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Trainees can also opt to complete a Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) if they feel this would be useful. The course covers the age range 3 to 7 years although trainees also spend a short time in a Key Stage 2 class.
Trainees are assigned a trained school based trainer within each school that they are placed. This person is responsible for supporting and guiding the trainee’s professional development and ensuring that they have the opportunities that they need within the school.
A trainee’s progress is assessed through regular formal and informal monitoring of teaching and written work.
Training in school progresses from observing and working alongside an experienced teacher to taking full responsibility, firstly for groups, and later for the whole class during the academic year. The course will produce qualified teachers who are competent and reflective across Early Years and Key Stage 1.
School placements
We work with over 70 schools across the county. This usually enables us to place trainees within a 30 minute drive from home.
Trainees on this course complete their Autumn term placement in a Foundation Stage class and their Spring term placement in a Key Stage 1 class in a different school. During the Summer term, trainees usually return to the same Foundation Stage class as they were placed in during the Autumn term.
During Spring trainees can apply to take part in an enhanced placement. These take place in special schools, area resource bases, pupil referral units and nursery schools. Enhanced placements aim to extend a trainee’s experience in a particular area of interest or need. Applications are carefully considered by the Course Leaders.
Entry requirements
Qualifications needed
- A First Degree of a United Kingdom Higher Education Institution (Achieved or pending) with honours class 2.2 or an equivalent qualification.
- GCSE or O-Level grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science. From Summer 2017 the grades required under the new GCSE are 4-9.
Personal qualities
- Convey commitment and enthusiasm to teaching in the primary age range.
- Be able to clearly articulate appropriate reasons for wanting to teach primary children.
- High level of motivation and enthusiasm for teaching and learning.
Other requirements
As part of our commitment to safer recruitment, all successful candidates will undergo the full range of safeguarding checks, including their health & physical capacity to teach.
For those who have spent more than 3 months working or living abroad you may be required to gain a letter of good conduct or a workplace reference.
We are expected to make an assessment of fundamental English and mathematics knowledge before QTS is awarded. Any work to address shortfalls in English and mathematics must be undertaken by the trainee teacher in addition to other aspects of their training.
Fees and financial support
Financial support from the training provider
Trainees are highly likely to be eligible for Student Finance support. As part of our access to learning fund, we may be able to support those in financial hardship with course-related costs incurred during training. We also offer a termly contribution to all trainees with a household income lower than £25,000 as assessed by Student Finance.
About the training provider
Cornwall Teaching school aims to generate and maintain a sustainable model for developing local teachers and leaders and to secure outstanding practice in all phases of learning.
About the accredited body
Cornwall Teaching School works closely with the well-established Cornwall SCITT partnerships which offer initial teaching opportunities in early years, primary and secondary phases along with the Truro and Penwith College post 16 training. The teaching school will be working with school partners to develop School Direct opportunities for high quality trainees and will continue to respond to national and local needs for subject specialist trainees and cross phase priorities.
Interview process
During interview day candidates must be able to demonstrate evidence of their potential to become an effective primary teacher and have an awareness of current issues in education.
Training with disabilities and other needs
Cornwall SCITT is founded on the principles of equality and inclusion. Our management team, academic tutors, subject leaders and school-based mentors strive to ensure the best possible outcomes for all student teachers. Prior to the start of the course all student teachers undertake a health and physical capacity to teach check.
For those with additional learning needs, every student teacher receives bespoke support from a dedicated academic tutor who can provide support with assignment writing. Students can also access additional support through Student Finance’s Disabled Learning Allowance Scheme.
We carefully select placement schools for those with physical needs to optimise any reasonable adjustments that may be required. Mentors and subject leaders can provide support to those with visual and hearing difficulties to develop impairment-friendly strategies within the classroom.
Our personalised approach to learning allows those with mental health needs to develop their practice with support from the central management team. We offer an empathetic dialogue to provide an appropriate balance of support and challenge throughout the programme.
