About the course

South Bromsgrove is a well established and successful School Direct Lead School. Our partnership offers a strong colleagiate and supportive environment within which trainees thrive. We offer a dedicated training space, excellent facilities and expert mentoring and coaching. Our Professional Studies programme offers an ambitious curriculum aligned with the DfE Core Content Framework for Initial Teacher Training.

Our aim is to:

  • Encourage entrants to the profession who are motivated to pursue teaching as a career;
  • Develop teachers who are highly reflective, and curious about their own practice, the wider professional role of teachers and their impact on student learning and welfare;
  • Develop teachers who are committed to ongoing professional learning and have a sound bedrock of professional learning on which they can build;
  • Encourage teachers to value and contribute to a highly supportive, collaborative and collegiate culture in schools.

This course prepares trainees to teach Economics within secondary schools. The course involves a combination of practical teaching experience and taught modules on pedagogy and broader aspects of education. Trainees will be placed at South Bromsgrove High Academy for the main placement and will undertake a second, contrasting school experience placement at another school. Second school placements will be arranged during the first term and will be carefully matched to the needs of the trainee.

The professional studies element of the course will be coordinated by South Bromsgrove High Academy on a particular day each week. The unique aspect of this programme is that the delivery will be shared across schools in a wider alliance, who have specific areas of expertise. This will also allow insight into First, Middle, High and Special Schools. Much of the Professional Studies element will involve linking theory to classroom practice and will involve input from a variety of teachers, school leaders and Specialist Leaders in Education.

The subject based elements of the programme will be delivered in collaboration with University of Worcester, School of Education. Trainees are required to undertake 2 assignments across the year. These will be coordinated by Worcester University.

Assessment on this course is carried out via a combination of lesson observation and written assignment. On completion, trainees receive QTS and a PGCE qualification.

School placements

This programme is based at South Bromsgrove High Academy . The school, in collaboration with University of Worcester will arrange a second school experience placement that will take place during the Spring term. The school will be selected based on the training needs of the individual trainee and location.

Trainees will be assigned a designated Subject Mentor whilst in school, along with a Professional Mentor. Mentors will work together to ensure that trainees are making good progress in their teaching practice and that all emerging training needs are being met.

The school experience placements will ensure that trainees are able to teach across the full age range, from 11 - 18.

Trainees will spend the majority of their time in school, but will attend Worcester University for professional and subject studies for a number of days across the year.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

We are looking for the following personal qualities in our prospective trainees:

  • A commitment to the welfare and well-being of young people
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and an ability to relate to young people
  • A passion for your subject and for education in general
  • A willingness to learn through experience and respond to feedback
  • Some prior school experience is not expected, but is recommended

Other requirements

All prospective trainees will be subject to a medical questionnaire, assessing their fitness to teach and an Enhanced DBS check.

The unique aspect of our School Direct training programmes is that delivery is shared across schools from our wider alliance, who have specific areas of expertise. This allows insight into First, Middle, High and Special Schools and a broader understanding of education and pedagogy. Our highly successful primary programme is coordinated by St John’s CofE Middle School (judged Outstanding by Ofsted in 2012) and placements are provided in a range of excellent local First, Middle and Primary Schools.

All schools in our partnership are highly committed to the training of teachers in a school based environment with access to high quality support from Higher Education Institutions. South Bromsgrove TTP has experienced subject and professional mentors who are involved in the planning and development of the School Direct courses. Every trainee is assigned a Professional and Subject Mentor who will be experienced in mentoring, coaching and giving feedback. You will meet with your mentor regularly, to review and set targets related to the teacher standards.

Interview process

Candidates will attend two interviews. The first interviews will take place at South Bromsgrove High Academy. These will typically take one half day and will involve the following:

  • written task
  • small group / class teaching
  • interview

Interviews will be conducted by the Lead Mentor and the Subject Mentor for Economics.

The second interview will be held at University of Worcester and will involve the following:

  • written task
  • group discussion
  • presentation
  • interview

Interviews will be carried out by Subject Tutors and other key staff from the School of Education.

In the event of ongoing social distancing measures, all interviews will be carried out online.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
