A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Trainees will spend most of the training year based in their placement schools allocated from across White Rose Alliance partners. Trainees will undertake two contrasting placements: placement one running from September to Christmas, and placement two running from January to June.

The course structure enables trainees to develop their confidence and teaching knowledge in a supportive environment. Training will be led by University tutors and school staff and delivered in cross-subject groups, predominantly delivered in schools.

In addition to travel to their placement schools, during the course trainees are required to travel to the course accrediting university, York St John University, generally on Wednesday afternoons until Christmas, where trainees receive further training and be able to access all the specialist support that you would expect from a university. Trainees are also required to travel to the White Rose Alliance Lead School, King James’s School in Knaresborough, for their Professional Studies programme every Wednesday morning until March.

The course leads to a PGCE qualification and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) .

Interview process

All WRA interviews take place at King James’s School in Knaresborough. Candidates will generally be given one week’s notice of interview whenever possible & the session will usually last for a morning. Depending on applications received, the number of candidates attending (& their subjects) are likely to vary. During the interview session, candidates can expect to have a subject discussion with a subject specialist, undertake a subject test, lead a teaching activity with a group of six Year 7 or 8 students (observed by the interview panel) & have a formal interview. Depending on numbers of candidates at any particular interview session, candidates may also be asked to participate in a group discussion task. The panel for the formal interview will comprise 2 or 3 members of a combination of White Rose Alliance staff, partner school staff or university staff. Candidates will be advised of the interview outcome as soon as possible after the session, once all information from the interview activities has been collated. Should there be any delay to this, candidates will be advised at the end of the interview session.

How school placements work

For the majority of the course, trainees are school-based. Trainees will in school unless attending sessions at their link university (in general terms one day per week), the weekly Professional Studies sessions at King James’s School on Wednesday mornings or School Experience Days at WRA partner schools.

  • Hambleton and Richmondshire Pupil Referral Service (a WRA partner school used for school experience days but trainees will not undertake school placements here)
  • Boroughbridge High School, Boroughbridge

Trainees undertake 2 contrasting placements in our partner schools: Placement 1 from September to Christmas and Placement 2 from January to June.

When deciding which schools our trainees will have their placements in, we take into account a number of factors including trainee home location and transport arrangements (ie. do you have your own vehicle or are you reliant on public transport?). We will not place trainees in a school where daily distance from home to school was excessive or impractical. However, we do also have to take into account accommodating the rest of the cohort and the needs of our partner schools (not all schools are able to offer placements in all subjects). Not all WRA partner schools are able to provide placements for all subjects & therefore on occasions, it may be necessary for trainees to undertake placements in non-WRA schools. In addition to their 2 placements, trainees will also have an opportunity to visit the Hambleton & Richmondshire PRS for a paired day visit plus have School Experience Days in some of our other partner schools as part of our Professional Studies programme.

During their school placements trainees will be expected to cover the 11-16 age range plus obtain experience of some 11-18 as well during their course.

  • Honours degree in chosen subject at 2.2 or above. If degree subject is not fully in the subject applied for, but applicant holds an A Level in the subject & can demonstrate subject experience, applicant may still be considered & if successful at interview, such an applicant is likely to be required to complete a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE); this would become a condition from any offer made at interview.

  • GCSE Grade Cs or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.

Other requirements

Standard university conditions will apply to all offers made at interview. These include proof of qualifications (candidates will be required to produce degree certificate & GCSE Maths & English certificates for verification), have an Enhanced DBS check & complete a medical check.
