About the course

The course age range is 11-16 with 16-18 enhancement.

Trainees will spend most of the training year based in their placement schools allocated from across White Rose Alliance partners. Trainees will undertake two placements: placement one running from September to Christmas, and placement two running from January to June. In addition to their specific specialism (ie. Chemistry), science subject trainees will be expected to teach general science in Key Stage 3.

The course structure enables trainees to develop their confidence and teaching knowledge through three stages. Training will be led by University tutors and school staff and delivered in cross-subject groups, predominantly delivered in schools.

In addition to travel to their placement schools, during the course trainees are required to travel to the course accrediting university, Leeds Trinity University, generally one day per week until Christmas, where trainees receive further training and be able to access all the specialist support that you would expect from a university. Trainees are also required to travel to the White Rose Alliance Lead School, King James’s School in Knaresborough, for their Professional Studies programme every Wednesday morning until March. Whilst the intention is for university and White Rose Alliance sessions to be delivered in person, where this is not possible at the time due to Covid-19 restrictions or exceptional circumstances, alternative arrangements will be made to run university & White Rose Alliance sessions virtually.

The course leads to a PGCE qualification and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

School placements

For the majority of the course, trainees are school-based. Trainees will be in their placement school unless attending sessions at their link university (in general terms one day per week), the weekly Professional Studies sessions at King James’s School on Wednesday mornings or School Experience Days at WRA partner schools.

Trainees undertake 2 placements in our partner schools: Placement 1 from September to Christmas and Placement 2 from January to June.

When deciding which schools our trainees will have their placements in, we take into account a number of factors including trainee home location and transport arrangements (ie. do you have your own vehicle or are you reliant on public transport?). We also have to take into account accommodating other members of the cohort and the availability of placements from our partner schools. Not all WRA partner schools are able to provide placements for all subjects & therefore on occasions, it may be necessary for trainees to undertake placements in non-WRA schools. In addition to 2 school placements, trainees also participate in School Experience Days in some of our other partner schools as part of our Professional Studies programme.

During their school placements trainees will be expected to cover the 11-16 age range plus obtain experience of some 11-18 as well during their course.

If there is any impact on school placements as a result of Covid-19, we will inform you before the course starts.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

  • Honours degree in subject at 2.2 or above. If degree subject is not fully in course subject, but applicant has an A Level in the subject & can demonstrate subject-related experience, applicant may still be considered. If successful at interview, such an applicant may be required to complete subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) as an offer condition & it will be the candidate’s responsibility to gain such subject knowledge if the SKE package published in Dec 20 will not fund this.
  • GCSE Grade Cs or above (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics plus GCSE Science for Science subject applicants.

Other requirements

Standard university conditions will apply to all offers made at interview. These include proof of qualifications (candidates will be required to produce degree certificate & GCSE Maths & English certificates for verification), obtain Enhanced DBS clearance & complete a medical check.

Interview process

WRA interviews take place remotely. Candidates will generally be given one week’s notice of interview whenever possible & dates/times are flexible.

Candidates will be required to have undertake a subject test, prepare a lesson plan & resources for a teaching/learning activity (to present during the formal interview) & have a formal interview. The panel for the formal interview will comprise 2 members of a combination of White Rose Alliance staff, partner school staff or university staff. The formal interview will take place via Zoom & the subject test will be via email. Candidates will be advised of the interview outcome as soon as possible after the session, once all information from the interview activities has been collated.
