PGCE with QTS
A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.
It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.
Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course
Our inspirational School Direct Programme, led by Ashmount School in Loughborough, is built on a long history of successful school based Initial Teacher Training.
We work alongside the University of Derby to enable trainees to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Credits towards a Master’s Degree too.
We have an excellent track record of our trainees achieving “Outstanding” or “Good” in their final assessments.
We help you to prepare for and secure your first teaching role and many of the schools we work with are keen to employ our trainees.
You’ll be part of the teaching team in your placement school from day one, learning from experienced colleagues and putting your new skills into practice straight away.
We will support you every step of the way, with your own personal mentor and academic support from our partner University of Derby.
School placements
We have approximately 25 member schools that we send trainees to, as well as a number of other local schools that we work closely with.
You can choose from three different pathways to specialise in: 3-7, 5-11 or SEND.
During the year, you will spend the Autumn and Summer Terms at your Main Placement school in one Key Stage and then the Spring Term will be spent in a contrasting Key Stage.
You will be based for 4 days per week in your placement school, and the other day is spent at either Ashmount School or the University of Derby undertaking core training.
We organise your placements for you and where possible, we try not to make you travel too far from home.
Key training is led by experienced and specialist leaders, including University staff, Headteachers, SLEs and successful teachers.
There is also the opportunity to complete Enhancement Placements in other types of schools.
Entry requirements
Qualifications needed
An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.
We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.
Personal qualities
If you have the motivation, commitment, resilience and ability to inspire a love of learning, then this is the course for you.
Other requirements
- A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is required at the point of accepting a place at the University. The Disclosure and Barring Service was established when the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) merged in 2012 and will now provide the criminal records checking service for this course.
Fees and financial support
Studying for a postgraduate degree is a good investment in your future, but you need to carefully consider how you’re going to pay for your course and your living costs.
Most students will be able to apply for loans and depending on where you live and your circumstances, bursaries and scholarships might also be available.
The University of Derby postgraduate degrees are competitively priced and all the essential equipment and activities are included.
The fees are slightly different depending on whether you normally live in the UK/EU or outside of the EU.
Financial support from the training provider
To pay for your tuition fees and living costs, you may be able to take out a student loan. These loans don’t usually need to be paid back until you have graduated and are earning a good salary.
Sometimes, bursaries and scholarships are also available - it depends on your circumstances and which country you usually live in. These don’t need to be paid back.

About the training provider

We work with a number of schools to provide high quality placements and we ensure that our trainees are well supported throughout their training year (and beyond).
Interview process
If you are successful, you will be invited to interview at Ashmount School in Loughborough.
You will be interviewed by the Teaching School Manager and another Senior Leader (i.e. Headteacher from a Member School).
During the day, you will be asked to lead a sample lesson to your peers, which you will have been given information on, prior to the day.
You will also be required to complete Mental Maths and English tests along with written tests.
International candidates
You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:
- are an Irish citizen
- have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
- have indefinite leave to remain in the UK
If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.
To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.
Sponsorship is not available for this course.
If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.
Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications
If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.
You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:
- guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
- a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)
Training with disabilities and other needs
We would encourage applicants with any specific needs to talk to us so that we can plan accordingly to meet their requirements to support and accommodate.
