About the course

As a trainee with us, you will be trained in highly supportive and aspirational environments. We will support you to develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning. Right from the beginning you will be treated like a member of our staff and be expected to take part in all aspects of school life.

As a trainee teacher you will receive high quality support and professional development and we have a shared understanding of what teachers at the start of their careers require. We have developed a cohesive framework of bespoke in school training sessions for new trainee teachers that is part of a two year professional pathway from ITT to NQT. This training is intended to support and inspire you whilst complimenting the bespoke work that takes place in individual schools and at University.

We believe that the School Direct Programme is pivotal in our drive to promote outstanding teaching and learning in our schools and we feel privileged to be able to nurture and develop new and exciting talent in to the profession. All of our past trainees have moved immediately into employment following their training year with us.

The Schools Direct Programme will provide:

Interview process

After an initial screen to check you meet the minimum entry requirements your application will be read by an expert panel who will invite successful applicants to interview. Our university partner, UCL Institute of Education, will review all applications and may also join us on interview days.

The interview is likely to include:

  • Planning and teaching a guided group in which you will be observed to see how you interact with children. A reflective discussion of your session.

  • A written task, designed to assess the quality of candidates’ written English and their understanding of current issues in Education.

  • A maths task.

  • Formal interview with members of the Selection Panel.

Demand for places is always high and so a rigorous and thorough recruitment process ensures that only the very best applicants are accepted onto the course.

Candidates will be advised of the exact format of the interview in advance.

Applicants who are successful at interview will be offered a conditional place subject to:

  • Satisfactory references
  • Satisfactory Fitness to Teach assessment
  • Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service record check (DBS)
  • Satisfactory completion of 5 days volunteering within the school.

The purpose of the additional days in school is to ensure that the School Direct Programme is the right decision for both the candidate and the school. It is also an opportunity for us to gain information about you to inform the initial needs analysis, the setting of pre-course tasks and your personal training plan.

How school placements work

Our high performing Primary schools are all very experienced at supporting trainees throughout their training year and as a trainee you could be placed in any one of our schools.

We understand the strength in collaborative working and run ITT training purely for our trainees. This means that as a trainnee with us you are able to build a strong network of support amongst your cohort and learn from each other within your different settings.

You will also join the outstanding School Direct Salaried programme at the Institute of Education and have full access to the University’s facilities throughout the year.

The Salaried programme involves attending a programme of lectures and workshops at University for approximately 15 days spread over Fridays during the Autumn and Spring terms.

These sessions will engage with generic and subject specific areas and will encourage you to become a reflective teacher.

You will also be assigned a university tutor who will help to create your bespoke training programme as well as support your development as a teacher through tutorials, visits to school and guidance with assignments.


Salary for the School Direct programme is calculated using the unqualified teachers’ pay scale.

Financial support

Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.



  • Degree Applicants should hold an honours degree (2:1 or above).

  • GCSE Applicants should hold a GCSE at grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science.

  • Other Qualifications Candidates will be required to pass English and Mathematics tests before beginning the course administered at interview.

  • Experience The School Direct Training programme (salaried) is open to graduates with three years, or more, career experience.

  • Other Requirements All successful candidates will be required to complete Occupational Health and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure checks.

We apply the Fitness to Teach requirement to all applicants.

About the training provider

The New Wave Teaching School Alliance offers trainee teachers the unique opportunity to work and learn in a range of exciting and innovative primary schools.
