A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

St James’s School Direct Partnership offers a comprehensive training package for all our trainees on our School Direct PGCE with QTS course. We have experienced and fully trained subject mentors who are committed to developing the next generation of ‘Outstanding’ teachers.

Within our programme, trainees enjoy a blended programme which includes the following;

  • Trainees benefit from at least one hour per week of subject mentor input as well as weekly Professional Studies with the professional mentor.
  • Attending group training sessions with the cohort of trainees, receiving high quality practitioner-led training, peer support and joint practice development opportunities.
  • Trainees follow weekly themes which build up pedagogy and practice and the principles of the ITT Core Content Framework underpins all our training. Examples of sessions include devising outstanding lesson plans, how to question pupils effectively to maximise learning and progress, Quality First Teaching and metacognition to name just a few.
  • School-led professional learning where you would be able to take advantage of a range of professional development opportunities within your own school and schools within the Partnership.
  • Attending high quality training provided by other schools and the Partnership throughout the year.
  • Completing at least 120 school based days
  • Completing the Liverpool Hope PGCE elements to the course consisting of 16 Subject away days, 5 Assess days and 4 Educational conferences at Liverpool Hope.
  • Complete 2 x 5000 word written assignments as a requirement of your PGCE (60 Masters credits)
  • Focussed support and mentoring, by the very best practitioners within their own school.
  • Trainees in secondary schools are attached to a form group and also gain PSHE experience from our trained PSHE mentors.
  • Opportunities to participate in extra-curricular clubs which allows trainees to make a wider contribution to the life and ethos of their school.

Throughout the year you will be very well supported. We are keen to see each individual trainee working to achieve the very best and enjoying success in their chosen career. We know professional development is a two way process. As such we will listen to you, work to identify your own development needs and support you in meeting your targets. Towards the end of the Programme of training, trainees will be fully supported to seek and obtain employment.

School placements

Each Partnership school has unique qualities and these are shared with the cohort whichever school trainees are based in for placements. With our Programme, trainees will start their journey into teaching by coming into school on the first day of term in September and immediately feel like part of the school.

Trainees will be placed in any two of the partnership schools, Placements are decided by the partnership. Trainees will be placed in schools where the department is strong and the subject mentor is excellent, to allow the best possible learning journey for the trainee. Placements run as follows:

Our programme follows an AB model. During the year you will be attached to two schools:

  • Placement A from Sept-Feb
  • Placement B from Feb-July (this will be in a contrasting placement in another Partnership school.

This is designed to enhance and extend your knowledge of different teaching contexts, and of how pupils respond in different environments. Our programme will include a small amount of time looking at primary education/post 16 education/alternative provision so that trainees understand the full education journey. For candidates who have a desire to specialise in Post16 education we can offer a placement in a school with a Sixth Form.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:1 or above, or equivalent.

A 2:1 degree is preferred however we will consider those with a 2:2.

Your degree subject should be in Art & Design or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

Personal qualities

We are looking for high quality graduates and career changers who want to make a difference to children and young people, to embark on our Initial Teacher Training Programme. We are looking to recruit outstanding trainees who have real potential to teach with the following personal qualities;

  • Passion and knowledge in your subject area
  • Ability to work as part of a team and maintain appropriate relationships
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Good level of literacy and numeracy skills
  • Willingness to be involved in the wider life of the school/extracurricular activities

Other requirements

A Portfolio will be required at Interview - we may ask this to be sent or viewed virtually.

Successful applicants will be required to undergo a DBS check with Liverpool Hope University.

Copies of the originals of all the applicant’s qualification certificates must be seen, together with ID documents (passport; photo driving licence or two utility bills or similar from within the last 3 months, showing the applicant’s name and address).

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

Interview process

Our interview day will consists of all or a combination of the following tasks:

  • Group Task
  • Written task
  • Mini teach
  • Formal interview

Interviews are undertaken by the Alliance Lead for the Partnership along with a specialist in the subject,

Candidates will be given specific information about the tasks to be undertaken when being invited for interview.

We endeavour to inform applicants of the outcome of their interview on the same day.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.
