A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

Maths If you have an interest and strong background in maths, our teacher training course is for you. In addition to possessing sound mathematical skills, we are looking for applicants who have a genuine passion to communicate and break down this complex subject to young secondary school students.

The quality of teacher training in secondary education was rated as ‘Good’ in Ofsted’s report for Initial Teacher Education 2016. The report identified that “trainees demonstrate a good understanding of the requirements of the teachers’ standards. Trainees and newly qualified teachers are reflective and self-motivated.”

Our course will prepare you to become a professional, creative, competent and reflective teacher.

You will have the opportunity to gain 60 Master’s-level credits as part of our PGCE. In addition to university-based workshops, our course includes two school placements plus extensive support in the form of online materials.

During your training, you will be investigating how to address common errors and misconceptions through pedagogy. All the while you will be improving your core subject knowledge of maths and how these skills relate to Maths Mastery.

There will be a continuous assessment of classroom skills and teaching effectiveness builds towards a professional development portfolio. There are also written and practical assignments with opportunities for Master’s level credits in the postgraduate version.

Our past trainees have also contributed to a national project run by the Personal Finance Education Group. This supports schools in the teaching and learning of financial mathematics.

Additionally, we give you the option of a blended Subject Knowledge Enhancement courses prior to starting your PGCE

School placements

Our one-year programme comprises of two elements: 60 days of university-based teaching and 120 days of school-based experience. Your practical teaching experience is gained in two main schools. Here you will be allocated subject-specialist mentors who will offer dedicated feedback and guidance. During both placements, you will have the opportunity to develop your science and biology teaching with the support of a specialist teacher.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on a fee-based teacher training course in England that leads to the award of qualified teacher status. Availability is dependent on your highest relevant academic award and the subject in which you are training to teach. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO BURSERY FOR PE

We are an alliance of strong and innovative schools, highly focused local authority support and universities (including the University of Greenwich and Goldsmiths University), collaborating to deliver excellent teaching and embed outstanding practice at all levels. his programme is led by Thomas Tallis secondary school, will run for 36 weeks, and is available to high-quality graduates. Successful completion will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and the award of Qualified Teaching Status (QTS). The programme comprises two elements; university-based teaching (with either the University of Greenwich or Goldsmiths University) and school-based experience. Practical teaching experience is gained in two main schools, where student teachers are allocated subject-specialist mentors who offer feedback and guidance. During both placements there is the opportunity to develop your subject teaching, supported by specialist teachers. As well as covering all aspects of the National Curriculum and addressing all relevant government standards, this programme helps trainee teachers to develop as effective teachers. Sessions with our University Partners cover a range of topics, including planning lessons, assessment of pupils and classroom management.

We offer the following subjects: Biology, Maths, MFL, Chemistry, Art & Design, Drama, English & Media, Design Technology, P.E., Physics, and Music.
