A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

Course summary

Why train in the Wider Ponteland Partnership?

During the course, you will spend 4 days per week in a school being trained by experienced teachers. The remaining day is spent either at a school within the partnership or Northumbria University. These training days will cover every aspect of teaching, including, for example, behaviour management, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND); planning and collaboration skills; along with bespoke training depending upon your individual needs.

This course has a specific focus on Key Stage One (KS1) and Key Stage Two (KS2) training. Your longer placement could be in either Key Stage.

You will spend most of the time in your host school with one shorter period in another partnership school during an assessed placement. There are three assessed placements across the year.

Along with school-based training, there will be assignments set by Northumbria University. These will be supported with taught sessions at the campus and a personal tutor. Finally, there will be a portfolio of evidence to present to demonstrate your achievements against the teaching standards.

Schools within the partnership are listed on the Ponteland Primary School website and are within the South Northumberland area.

School Direct at Ponteland Primary is successful at supporting trainees into employment, with a majority of students going straight into teaching positions following the course, sometimes within the partnership itself.

Pastoral care and outstanding mentoring are strong features of the partnership. Students’ wellbeing is paramount and our cohorts always work well together due to pre-course induction days and the opportunity to work collaboratively during the year.

School placements

You will spend most of the time in your host school with one 6 week period in another partnership school during a shorter assessed placement.

The 6-week placement will take place during the second half of the autumn term, finishing before the Christmas break.

From January you will remain in your host school, completing a long placement, split into two with a short break in between them.

Your longer placement could be in either Key Stage.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:1 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English, maths and science, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English, maths or science.

If your qualifications are from overseas, they must be checked for UK equivalence by NARIC.

This is a difficult and demanding year!

We are looking for applicants who have the potential to become outstanding teachers, display resilience and are able to work independently on their studies while training in a school context.

Other requirements

All offers of places are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure with a list check. If you are offered a place, you will be asked to provide a signed declaration relating to any police record.

All trainee teachers must also meet the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental health. (In practice, few health problems preclude applicants from teaching, and so we welcome applications from people with disabilities.)

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,250.

About the training provider

Thank you for your interest in training to become a teacher through the School Direct programme in The Wider Ponteland Partnership based at Ponteland Primary School.

If you are looking for a teacher training course in which you spend most of your time in school while you study, this course may be for you. You work with experienced teachers, first of all, observing and team teaching, then teaching independently.

We are pleased to be working in partnership with Northumbria University. Northumbria University is recognised by OFSTED as an outstanding provider of initial teacher education across all age phases.

The Wider Ponteland Partnership incorporates schools in the Ponteland, Cramlington and Morpeth partnerships. We are a group of schools comprising of 8 primary schools. The schools vary in size and character and include 4 faith schools.

We are pleased to allocate places for 2022/2023.

Interview process

Ponteland Primary coordinates the recruitment process on behalf of the partnership.

Following a short-listing process using your application form, successful applicants will be invited for an interview.

The interview session will involve a session spent at one of the schools. Each candidate will be expected to deliver a reading activity to a small group of pupils from within the primary phase.

There will also be the opportunity to talk to some staff, meet the headteacher and lead mentor and participate in a group discussion with any other candidates during the morning.

There may be a representative from our partner, Northumbria University at each of the interview days which will take place in clusters of 3 or 4 schools within the partnership.

Before the ‘formal’ interview, there will be a brief activity using books as a stimulus, which will then be discussed in the interview. The interviews will take place on the same day and will include questions on experiences and suitability for the course.

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.
