A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

On the NTTP Chemistry course, students will train towards a professional teaching qualification, achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The course requires a study of academic literature and completion of professional assignments, alongside two school based placements. The course is designed in line with the ITT Core Content Framework with focus on Behaviour Management, Pedagogy, Curriculum, Assessment and Professional Behaviours. By the end of the course trainee teachers must meet the Teachers Standards in full.

The course is perfect for those who find Science exciting and challenging who are then able to share this enthusiasm with young people. Trainees will experience lessons across a range of ages and attainment, reflecting the diverse needs of students in our schools. Trainees will work alongside an experienced team of Scientists, who have proven ability to ensure achievement for all students. You will explore a wide ranging content; develop knowledge and skills which will enable you to become an effective and inspiring classroom practitioner in Science. You will also have the opportunity to develop a range of lessons and teaching styles that cover the practical delivery and theory of Science at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, where appropriate. Trainees need to learn how to deliver in a style that suits their own personality but watch and learn from other teachers. Learning in a classroom requires professionalism, organisation, planning, preparation and excellent subject knowledge, across the department.

When you study Chemistry on the NTTP programme you receive a practice-led, hands on experience. Trainees are supported by a Subject Based Tutor (SBT) within school, the Professional Tutor of the school, the Lead Subject Mentor from the NTTP SCITT, the Programme Facilitators along with the Administration staff team. Subject Studies and General Professional Study sessions enhance your knowledge of teaching and learning and help to develop your pedagogy. Constant self-reflection allows trainees to assess their strengths and development potential, which should allow progression and confidence.

During your placements you will teach pupils in the 11 to 16 age range, however, in many of our partnership schools there will be the opportunity to experience Post 16 Education too. You will also experience PSHE and Citizenship delivery when acting as a form tutor.

School placements

We have long-established partnerships and rewarding connections with a wide variety of secondary schools across the county. Ideally, you will be required to spend a minimum of 12 weeks in two of our placement schools whilst on the course. You will work closely with our trained school based tutors receiving weekly one-to-one meetings to monitor your progress throughout your first and second placement. To qualify for QTS we will provide trainees with enough time in schools to demonstrate that they have achieved all the Teachers’ Standards. You will train with pupils in the 11 to 16 age range, however in many of our partnership schools there will be the opportunity to experience Post 16 Education too. You will be allocated to your placement school as a result of an initial induction and skills audit conducted early in the course. Your placement school will be identified to meet your needs and therefore may not be your nearest school.

Qualifications needed

An undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.

Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

We’ll consider candidates with pending GCSEs.

We’ll consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test in English or maths.

We do not offer Equivalency Tests.

Personal qualities

You must be flexible, resilient and motivated. Be able to demonstrate a clear enthusiasm for your subject and for teaching as a profession. You must have consistently high standards of professional and personal conduct and show tolerance and respect for the rights of others. You should act with honesty and integrity and be aware that teachers make the education of their students their first concern.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2022 to 2023 are £9,000.

About the training provider

Northampton School for Boys, an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ school (Nov 2014) is the Lead School for our SCITT - Northampton Teacher Training Partnership (NTTP) which is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ ITE Provider (2018). Your training will be with NTTP, a School-Centred Teacher Training provider based on the school site. We offer a one year full-time Secondary (11-16) teacher training course with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education validated by Newman University. Many of the partnership schools have ex-trainees as members of staff, some of whom work as School Based Tutors for us. The partnership is comprised of schools which offer a wide range of different experiences for our trainees. The vast majority of trainees who successfully achieve both QTS and an academic award, gain employment in local schools, which is a huge strength of the partnership together with an excellent completion and retention rate.

Interview process

As with any interview, the key to success is preparation. Make sure you do your research into the course, as well as the issues surrounding education and teaching in general. Policies and practices change quickly, so your knowledge needs to be up to date. An awareness of GCSE specifications is expected. The Interview process will entail:

  • Administrative Questions - 10 minutes
  • Presentation - “Why I want to become a teacher” - 5 minutes
  • Presenting a ‘Starter’ of your choice - 5 minutes
  • Interview - 40 minutes
  • Literacy written task - 20 minutes
  • Subject Knowledge Task - 30 minutes
  • Portfolio of work/video for Art and Performing Art subjects

Your interviewers will be looking for you to demonstrate a number of qualities. You should therefore try to tailor your answers and contributions to reflect these qualities. They are:

  • A commitment to and understanding of secondary education and the role of the teacher
  • Good personal, intellectual and communication skills
  • A positive attitude towards children and working with children
  • An enthusiasm for and understanding of your subject (s) and teaching in general.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.
