About the course
The Salaried course involves attending a programme of lectures and workshop at Institute for 15 days spread over the year. These sessions will engage with generic and subject specific areas and will encourage you to become a reflective teacher. You will also be assigned a university tutor who will help to create your bespoke training programme as well as support your development as a teacher through tutorials, visits to school and guidance with assignments.
The Teach Thurrock Primary Partnership offers an enhanced Professional Studies programme with trainees from all our schools coming together each week to study through a research based curriculum. With the unique guidance of the Dilkes Primary Teaching School Alliance trainees will use action based research to develop into outstanding teachers of the future. In turn, you will be part of a wider support network where you will have opportunities to share ideas and strategies with fellow trainees.
You will be assigned a mentor from the staff of your assigned school. Our mentors are outstanding teachers but they are required to undertake a rigorous training programme to develop their mentoring skills. This includes coaching, effective classroom observation and feedback skills.
Trainees will be expected to teach 40% of the time in their first term and carry out a wide range of personalised training; observation, team teaching and personal studies for the rest of their timetable.
In second term their teaching will increase to 60% and in Spring 2 they will carry out a Second School Experience in another school in the partnership. This experience will be in the opposite keystage to the one they have been teaching in their home school.
In the final term of the year, trainees are back in their home school and their teaching requirement is up to 80%. They will be gathering evidence and preparing for the final assessment towards their QTS.
On successful completion of the programme, the Teach Thurrock Primary Partnership will support the trainees in gaining a job in either a partnership schools or a school in Thurrock.
The interview will take the form of:
- A short written task
- A mathematical task (see below for examples)
- Teaching a skill to a group of children relevant to the age phase you wish
to train in
- An interview with a panel of head teachers from the partnership and
possibly a member of the Institute of Education
If we wish to offer you a place on the course, you will be recommended to UCL Institute of Education who will carry out the necessary academic and experience checks (work for the salaried route)
Successful applicants will be notified by UCL Institute of Education as they are the accrediting body and are advised that until they receive an offer from the Institute they are not guaranteed a place on the course.
How school placements work
All 15 partnership schools are in Thurrock and they range from one form entry to three. We have academies and authority schools which gives candidates a wide range of training opportunities.
You will be offered an opportunity to visit prospective home schools and give feedback about why you may wish to train there. The final decision will be taken by the selection team but in most cases choices are honoured. This is a general primary school so you will be in either KS1 or KS2. You will have a Second School Experience in the other key stage in the spring term which will strengthen your evidence against the Teacher Standards.
The training year lasts from September to the end of July with the final assessment taking place in June.
Salaried training teachers will be paid on UQT 1 on the teachers’ pay scale. In real terms this is approximately £1,200 per calendar month. Trainees are paid from September 2019 until the 31st of August 2020.
Applicants do not pay any course fees. These are covered by the Grant home schools receive.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
- GCSE Mathematics, English and Science at a minimum Grade C and
current Grade 5 on the new system (or accepted equivalency)
- Degree must be 2.2 and above.
Degrees must be completed by July 2020.
School Direct (Salaried) is an employment-based route into teaching for graduates with previous work experience. Three years’ work experience in any field is desirable
We recommend you gain some experience in a primary classroom prior to interview.
Applicants whose first language is a language other than English may be required to produce evidence of their English proficiency.

About the training provider
“Teach Thurrock ” is an innovative one year primary school-based Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme through School Direct, in partnership with the Institute of Education. The programme is delivered by highly experienced lecturers, head teachers and outstanding teachers. The programme is essentially, a school based course within the partnership’s fifteen schools which is supported by input from the Institute of Education. All trainees are allocated to a home school and are supported by an experienced mentor. Trainees will have the opportunity to gain experience of working within a variety of phases of education within the diverse range of schools within the partnership. Our local training programme has been designed and will be run by head teachers and outstanding teachers from within the partnership. They will be able to share their experience and knowledge based on their own current practice and national trends.
At the end of the course trainees will either be awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) plus 60 Masters credits or Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Those candidates completing the School Direct salaried programme will be awarded QTS only. It is expected, that on completion of the programme, all successful candidates will be supported in gaining a teaching post within one of the partnership schools or a school in Thurrock.

About the accredited body
The Institute of Education are the accrediting body and “Teach Thurrock” trainees are registered with them. The Insitute of Education has ultimate responsibility for quality assurance and make the final decision on whether a PGCE QTS should be awarded. The lead school is Dilkes Academy and you will need to search for Teach Thurrock Primary Partnership on the UTT site (UCAS Teacher Training).
