About the course

If you are looking for a teacher training course in which you spend most of your time in-school while you study, this course may be for you. You work with experienced teachers, first of all observing and team teaching, then teaching independently. This is complemented by a placement of about 6 weeks’ teaching in another school plus various other visits. Your study is based on the distance learning resources on the eQ virtual learning environment (VLE). Training sessions are provided by experienced school staff, and you attend some training days run by eQ (up to about 10 days, mostly held in a venue in central London). You also have a subject-specialist visiting tutor from eQ.

School placements

Candidates as part of the application process:

  • nominate a school to train within
  • the age range they wish to teach Candidates will spend the majority of their time within their nominated school but will also undertake, at least, a six week placement in a second school. The second school must be a contrasting school to their main school. St John Southworth Enterprise and Research Alliance consists of some 30 schools which are a mixture of primary and secondary schools. This allows the Alliance to ensure that we are able to meet the needs of the candidates across a wide range of schools.

About the training provider

If you are looking for a teacher training course in which you spend most of your time in-school while you study, this course may be for you. You work with experienced teachers, first of all observing and team teaching, then teaching independently. You are will be based in one of the schools within the Saint John Southworth Enterprise and Research Alliance during your training, with a placement of about 6 weeks in a contrasting school.

A key feature of the programme is the individual support provided to candidates. A recent candidate noted that “The support provided to the trainees within the school is excellent at every level. This includes - but is by no means limited to - a mentor from the department who meets with you on a weekly basis; my lead school trainer, who oversees the more general assessment and evaluation of progress; and the added support system of the department and HOD, all of whom are always highly approachable. The programme provides trainees with ample in-class experience; opportunities to observe colleagues of various age groups, abilities and subjects and offers weekly INSET seminars which hone practical skills and help to clarify many aspects of training which may appear less accessible or relatable to ‘real life’ classroom teaching. Every tutor is vastly experienced, supportive, welcoming, and most of all, an outstanding teacher in their own right.”

Interview process

Candidates will normally be interviewed by a member of the Senior Leadership Team and the Head of Department. Interviews are structured into two parts - the first part of the interview will discuss with candidates their motivation for entry into the teaching profession. While the second half of the interview looks at the candidates understanding of the education system in England. As part of the interview candidates may be asked to teach a lesson of about 30 minutes to a class. Candidates may be asked to undertake a written task as part of the interview.

International students

We cannot sponsor visas. You’ll need to get the right visa or status to study in the UK.

You do not need a visa if you already have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or if you’re an Irish citizen.

Candidates with qualifications from non-UK institutions may need to provide evidence of comparability by applying for a UK ENIC statement.

Training with disabilities and other needs

Schools generally have good disability access to their site. However, candidates should check this with the school prior to your visit and interview, if you are shortlisted.

Please contact the school or eQ office for a discussion of your needs if they are not related to mobility, so that we can identify what additional support might be appropriate for you.
