This programme aims to ‘develop exceptional teachers who are effective, caring, critical and creative’.
The Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship Scheme at the university has been designed to be both academic and vocational. It provides challenging expectations of you as a teacher apprentice to create a high quality teaching and learning environment which will engage your interest and motivation. The broad aims of the main curriculum component of the programme are to:
develop your subject knowledge with a subject specialist mentor and teach you how to put that knowledge into practice (pedagogy) in order to thrive in the culture of our schools;
enable you to become a highly motivated, outstanding effective, creative and reflective practitioner;
prepare you for a career in teaching that will prove to be successful and rewarding;
develop in you a commitment to and enthusiasm for continuing professional and personal development;
provide you with sufficient information, experience and opportunity in order that you might achieve the National Teacher Standards to enable you to be recommended for QTS.
The Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship Scheme will consist of a combination of classroom practice and relevant in-school training. You will be teaching over four days in a high quality school from across our consortium. You will also be offered a programme of training developed and delivered by consortium schools and our HEI partners. In school, you will be supported by a dedicated and trained subject mentor, as well as a professional tutor, who are school-based experienced staff. In addition, you will also have University based professional and subject tutors.
The apprenticeship starts in September 2021 and will last for 4 terms. Training through our consortium will also provide you with opportunities to develop your educational and professional studies through school-based sessions that include:
Use of data and reporting; Liaison with parents
Behaviour – sanction and reward
G&T (more able) and PP students
SEN / EAL, including the new SEN Code of Practice
Assessment for Learning and Success Criteria
Pedagogy – planning and assessment
Access to our interactive NQT programme
Metacognition and EEF research on achievement including disadvantaged students
You will be in one school for the majority of the apprenticeship scheme with a second secondary 6 week placement during the programme. In addition, as part of your continual professional development, you will spend days in primary and SEND schools.
We currently work with over 16 partner secondary and primary schools.
GCSE (or recognised equivalents) in Science, Mathematics and English Language Grade C/Level 4 or above.
A degree classification of 2:1 or above is preferred; a 2:2 degree may be considered for exceptional candidates (must be in your subject area)
All students must show competence in Literacy and Numeracy.
The university requires a medical report which is to be deemed satisfactory to be successful.
You will need to have completed DBS enhanced disclosure which is deemed satisfactory by the university as part of the application.

Trainees completing an Apprenticeship or Initial Teacher Training Programme must demonstrate the required competencies in the Fundamentals and English and Maths outlined by the Department for Education before Qualified Teacher Status is awarded.
To ensure trainees meet the required competencies you will be required to show evidence throughout the course. Please note, it is the trainee’s responsibility to secure these fundamental skills.
The salary will be calculated using the unqualified teachers’ pay scales with any possible relevant experience.

We are a consortium of secondary and primary schools across Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent and the Peak District. Through our links with our university partners, we offer an innovative approach to your development as a teacher; a number of our school based colleagues lead sessions at the University, enabling you to benefit from the strengths that both the university and our schools bring to your teacher education programme. All our schools share our vision to develop exceptional teachers who are effective, caring, critical and creative. We seek to develop your talents and attributes in relation to secondary pedagogy. This will enable you to not only meet the competencies required by the Teacher’s Standards, but to exceed them. The Painsley Consortium of schools is part of the wider University partnership of secondary schools comprises a mixture of faith schools (Catholic and Church of England), as well as local authority and academy settings. You will be able to benefit from placements in two school settings; each providing a contrasting experience. Whilst on placement we will support you in offering children a broad and balanced curriculum, one that both engages and excites them. It is a privilege for us to be working in a diverse region with exceptional teachers. We respect the cultures and backgrounds of the young people in our settings. In particular, we value the transformative role that a high quality secondary educational experience has, it enables young people to become informed, empowered and engaged and improving the outcomes for all.
As a Lead School we will work together with the University of Derby in order to shortlist suitable candidates. If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an interview. In addition to a formal interview, you will be asked to undertake an observed short teaching task working with pupils and you will sit mock literacy and numeracy tests. The interview will take place at the school advertising the Level 6 Teacher Apprenticeship and will be conducted by the Teaching School.
Use your personal statement to tell us why you are committed to become a teacher. You should also tell us about your experience within schools and what insights you have gained into high quality teaching and learning. You should refer to any reading you have undertaken to prepare for a career in teaching indicating what you have learnt from this. If you already have links with a supporting school, please include this within your statement.
