This programme aims to develop exceptional teachers who are effective, caring, critical and creative.
The Secondary Initial Teacher Education Programme (School Direct) at the university has been designed to be both academic and vocational and provides challenging expectations of you as a beginning teacher - to create a teaching and learning environment which will engage your pupils’ interest and motivation. The broad aims of the programme curriculum are to:
Develop your subject knowledge and teach you how to put that knowledge into practice (pedagogy)
Enable you to become a highly motivated, outstanding effective, creative and reflective practitioner
Develop in you a commitment to and enthusiasm for continuing professional and personal development;
Provide you with sufficient information, experience and opportunity in order that you might achieve the Teacher Standards to enable you to be recommended for QTS and gain your PGCE with 60 masters credits.
Your personalised School Direct Programme will consist of a combination of classroom practice and relevant in-school training. You will be given the opportunity to spend the majority of your time on ‘teaching practice’ at a range of high quality school placements from across our consortium, as the idea behind School Direct is that you spend the majority of your time during your training year in school, ‘learning on the job’. We currently work with over 16 partner secondary and primary schools across Stoke-on-Trent, the Staffordshire Moorlands and Newcastle-under-Lyme.
You will also be offered a programme of training developed and delivered by the Hub and its consortium schools and our HEI partner. In school, you will be supported by a dedicated and trained mentor, as well as a professional tutor, who are school-based experienced staff. You will also have University-based tutors and a designated ITT Coordinator for the Hub, who will all support you throughout your training year.
Training through our consortium will also provide you with opportunities to develop your educational and professional studies through Hub-based sessions that include:

How Children Learn
Questioning and Communication
SEND provision and its application in the classroom
Subject-specific sessions personalised to your cohort (KS3, 4 and 5
plus a session on planning schemes of learning)
How to prepare for the ECT year
Roles and responsibilities/Progression opportunities in schools
Your training lasts for one academic year (September-July) and consists of two placements - you will attend your main placement from September to Christmas and the second placement from January until just after February half-term. You will return to your main placement from then until the end of the programme in July. There are also two Enhanced Placement Opportunity weeks within the programme, whereby you will spend one week engaging with opportunities to enhance your understanding of Inclusivity and Diversity and one week in a setting of your choice (this could be a special school, a PRU or any other relevant setting or activity).
An undergraduate degree, or equivalent. This should be an honours degree (Third or above), or equivalent.
Your degree subject should be in art and design or a similar subject. Otherwise you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
Grade 4 (C) or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.
We will not consider candidates with pending GCSEs.
We will not consider candidates who need to take a GCSE equivalency test.

Trainees completing an Initial Teacher Training Programme must demonstrate the required competencies in the Fundamentals and English and Maths outlined by the Department for Education before Qualified Teacher Status is awarded.
To ensure trainees meet the required competencies you will be required to undertake and pass the University’s agreed assessment which will take place when you commence your course. Full details of the required competencies and assessment will be provided in due course. Please note, it is the trainee’s responsibility to secure these fundamental skills.
Fees and financial support
The course fees for UK students in 2023 to 2024 are £9,250.

We are a consortium of secondary and primary schools across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent. Through our links with our university partners, we offer an innovative approach to your development as a teacher; a number of our school based colleagues lead sessions at the University, enabling you to benefit from the strengths that both the university and our schools bring to your teacher education programme. All our schools share our vision to develop exceptional teachers who are effective, caring, critical and creative. We seek to develop your talents and attributes in relation to secondary pedagogy. This will enable you to not only meet the competencies required by the Teacher’s Standards, but to exceed them. The Golden Thread TSH Consortium of schools is part of the wider University partnership of secondary schools comprises a mixture of faith schools (Catholic and Church of England), as well as local authority and academy settings. You will be able to benefit from placements in 2 school settings; each providing a contrasting experience. Whilst on placement we will support you in offering children a broad and balanced curriculum, one that both engages and excites them. As a Teaching School Hub, we work together with our partner university in order to shortlist suitable candidates. If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an interview.
The interview process usually includes a short lesson observation with a KS3 class, a brief outline of the programme, a written task and an individual interview with the ITT Coordinator for the Teaching School Hub plus a subject specialist. The purpose of the written task is to ascertain that you are able to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English, and also reflect upon your subject knowledge for teaching. There will also be a short Maths test. Both of these activities allow your literacy and numeracy skills to be assessed through the Hub in line with the DfE’s requirements.
It would help you to prepare for your interview if you did some background reading, especially around curriculum and behaviour management. If Covid restrictions are in place, you will have a virtual interview - the expectations of which would be communicated to you at that time.
Use your personal statement to tell us why you wish to become a teacher. You should also tell us about your experience within schools and what insights you have gained into high quality teaching and learning. You should refer to any reading you have undertaken to prepare for a career in teaching, indicating what you have learnt from this. If you already have links with a supporting school, please include this within your statement.
