About the course
You will be trained in a highly supportive and aspirational environment and will develop the rigour, professional knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the delivery of creative, purposeful and challenging teaching and learning.
Most of the training will be delivered by expert teachers at the school. This will be enhanced by attendance at the university.
You will have full access to the University of Hertfordshire, a dynamic facilitator of both innovative and traditional approaches to teacher training.
You will be assigned a teacher mentor from your colleagues within your subject area and will also be supported by the school’s professional mentor who is a member of the senior leadership team.
From the beginning you will be treated like a member of staff and will attend staff meetings and development days. For school direct salaried colleagues you will be involved in a paid two week induction placement prior to the start of your School direct year to ensured that from the first day of the school year you will feel confident in your new role within the school
Kings Langley School is the lead school in the partnership and will be co-ordinating the recruitment process.
For short listed candidates this will involve a full day spent at the school and will include teaching a 30 minute observed lesson, some short written tests for literacy, numeracy and subject knowledge and the opportunity to talk to some staff and pupils.
You will be told in advance about the content of the lesson and the age group you will be teaching. A colleague from one of our partner schools will also be involved.
It is a rigorous and thorough process, designed to get the best match of applicant to the places available.
How school placements work
In the spring term you will do a teaching placement in one of our partner schools or with an associated school direct partner. All schools have comprehensive intakes and you will get experience of working with young people of all abilities. At least one of your placements will give you access to post-16 learners.
Trainees are employed as an unqualified teacher on the unqualified teachers’ pay scales. University training fees will be paid to the University of Hertfordshire directly by the lead school.
Financial support isn’t available for this course because it comes with a salary.
If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
You should be a graduate, preferably with a 1st or a 2:1, though we are willing to consider applicants who have a 2:2 who can demonstrate a real aptitude for teaching. You should have a degree in which the majority of the content was in English.
Applicants with relevant industrial or commercial experience are welcome to apply.
You’ll need at least a grade C or new grade 4 in GCSE English Language and Maths
We are looking for ambitious trainee teachers who are passionate and enthusiastic about English and have a desire to share this with young people of all abilities in the secondary age range.
This will be demonstrated by meaningful experience of working with young people of this age. This does not need to be paid work but might be helping with a sports team, drama group or youth club. We would like you to have done some observation in a classroom or you may even have worked in a school.
About the training provider
Kings Langley School (lead school) has been part of the Dacorum Strategic Partnership working together with local secondary schools since September 2001. Examples of our collaborative working include:
- shared sixth form provision with shared teachers, classes and timetables;
- whole school CPD for teachers and support staff;
- leadership exchange programmes,
- Middle leader professional development programmes,
- teacher placement exchanges
- shared school policies
- shared transport provision.
This year two local primary schools , Kings Langley Primary School and Saint Alfred the Great Catholic Primary School are also working with us as part of the school direct programme.
As a school we are recognised by the local authority as a school with strong leadership and management expertise and as such over a number of years we have been asked to support schools within Hertfordshire. For example, during the last academic year the headteacher was acting as the executive headteacher for Cavendish School in Hemel Hempstead.
As a school we have a proven track record of working with teacher trainees having successfully supported students over a number of years in their PGCE placements, OTT in assessment only routes, GTTPR and School Direct programmes. Kings Langley School has a 100% success rate for the completion by trainees on the School Direct programme.
The school moved into a new purpose built school in September 2016. This gives trainees and teachers from our partnership the opportunity to work with state of the art technology and resources when delivering our ITT programmes.
