This Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) Secondary Art & Design course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is identical to the University of Reading’s course W1X1.

The aim of the partnership between the Wokingham Federation and the University of Reading is to train excellent practitioners who have a positive impact on their pupils. This is accompanied by the recognition that excellent teachers continue to develop throughout their careers and never stop learning. Our intention therefore is that trainees should take ownership of their development during this year of training and establish the habits of reflective practice that will sustain them throughout their careers.
The course offers considerable practical experience which is grounded in rigorous educational research. At the University, trainees will be taught by staff with national reputations as experts in the field of Art and Design in education, and together trainees will examine a range of pedagogical approaches to art teaching. They are also provided with many tools to enable them to be high quality and flexible teachers.
University-based teaching is through a series of lectures, practical seminars and workshops, where interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage trainees to engage, reflect and challenge. The purpose-built studios with their extensive resources and equipment will provide the setting for trainees to address all aspects of secondary Art and Design, including specialist expertise in areas such as digital art, textiles, photography, ceramics, printmaking, painting, drawing, contemporary and historical studies.
