This Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) Secondary MFL course leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is identical to the University of Reading’s courses R1X1, R2X1 and R4X1. Applicants to this course, 265R, will however be interviewed by the Wokingham Federation and if successful will train in two Federation schools. They will follow the same course as R1X1, R2X1 and R4X1 and will become members of the University in the same way as all the other successful applicants to this course.

The aim of the partnership of the Wokingham Federation and the University of Reading is to train excellent practitioners who have a positive impact on their pupils. This is accompanied by the recognition that excellent teachers continue to develop throughout their careers and never stop learning. Our intention therefore is that trainees should take ownership of their development during this year of training and establish the habits of reflective practice that will sustain them throughout their career.
Trainees will specialise in one main teaching language (either French, German or Spanish) but we strongly encourage all of them to teach a second language to at least beginner level.
University sessions will be taught through a series of lectures, practical seminars and workshops, where interactive and discussion-based techniques will encourage trainees to engage, reflect and challenge.
The PGCE will provide trainees with a theoretical framework for language teaching, closely integrated with practical advice on the preparation and delivery of effective and engaging language lessons. Assignments are designed to help them plan their teaching effectively and imaginatively and to evaluate their skills, particularly in terms of the quality of learning achieved by pupils.
