About the course
If you are looking for a teacher training course in which you spend most of your time in-school while you study, this course may be for you.
St. Elphege’s RC Infants’ School has been a teaching school since March 2014 and is the lead school for Emmaus Teaching School Alliance (ETSA). The school is working in partnership with St Mary’s University Twickenham (our accredited teacher training provider) and the following schools:

St Mary’s offer training in both Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) however not in the Early Years (EYs).
Your training will be predominantly based in your host / employing school other than 14 days at the university across the year; and your second placement at another school for 6-8 weeks.
Your host school will be St Elphege’s Infant or Junior school or another primary school in our alliance during your training, with a placement of about 6 weeks in a contrasting school. To find more information about the schools, please visit the website: www.emmaustsa.org.uk.
St Mary’s University is situated in Strawberry Hill, Twickenham in South West London. Founded in 1850, it is generally acknowledged to be the oldest Roman Catholic college in the UK. In 2000, St Mary’s celebrated 150 years in Education. With just under 4,000 students training to teach on primary and secondary courses, they are now London’s second largest teacher training course provider and in 2011, St Mary’s was deemed to be ‘outstanding’ by OfSTED during inspection.
Course tutors at St Mary’s are all skillful teachers themselves, with many years of experience in schools and higher education.
Applications are considered by the school, and selected for interview on the basis of the information within the application. Application forms will be scrutinised for the correct use of grammar, spelling and punctuation and we pay particular attention to qualifications, the personal statement, and the references.
For all our primary programmes partnered with St Mary’s, there is a two stage interview process. All shortlisted candidates are required to attend an initial university interview first and if you pass this successfully (which is common) then you would proceed to a school interview (normally within a day or two).
If shortlisted for interview, we will upload the first interview date to UCAS and shortly afterwards we will email you to confirm both interview dates and to provide further details regarding the school interview. The university would contact you separately about arrangements for the initial university interview.
The interview email will ask you to confirm your attendance at the interview and will supply the relevant email addresses for this reply.
The university interview would include some time for the university registry team to verify various identification documents and qualification certificates. You may be required to undertake group tasks with other candidates. The university will confirm details of their process to you directly.
The school interview is likely to include a tour of the school; literacy/numeracy tests; a classroom exercise and panel interview.

If you choose a course without a salary, you may be eligible for financial support while you study, including bursaries, scholarships and loans.
GCSEs or standard equivalent in Mathematics, English and a Science subject.
If you do not meet the above entry requirements - candidates have the opportunity to sit the St. Mary’s University GCSE Equivalency Test, together with named other approved Equivalency Test providers (Details on University Equivalency test website) – this will appear by mid - October.
TWO of the required GCSEs must be held at point of application.
During the interview and selection process, you will take part in an ONLINE interview and discussion that will allow you to evidence that you have thought carefully about your motives for becoming a teacher and can demonstrate that you have some emerging capability to reflect on what being a teacher means. The interview will be recorded in line with GDPR compliance.
At least basic Information and Communications Technology skills, with a commitment to developing these both for personal and pedagogical use
Openness to advice, guidance and positive professional criticism as part of development; Personal professionalism, including diligence, organisation, smartness of dress, punctuality and a commitment to full attendance

About the training provider
The Emmaus Teaching School Alliance (ETSA) began in 2014 and is based in Wallington, Greater London. The teaching school is part of the Federation of St. Elphege’s and Regina Coeli Catholic Schools and is designated to St. Elphege’s RC Infant School.
ETSA aims to improve teaching and learning in all areas of the primary curriculum, working tirelessly to stay at the forefront of government initiatives and pilot schemes. The teaching school focuses on three key areas: Initial Teacher Training (ITT), Continued Professional Development (CPD) and School to School Support (StSS).
ITT enables graduates to become qualified teachers through a variety of different routes such as School Direct, Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) placements and Bachelor of Education (Bed) placements. The Alliance offer tailored support for each individual candidate.
All student teachers that have been trained at ETSA have completed the course graded good or outstanding and have been employed immediately.
Working alongside our alliance partners, we have created a robust and exciting CPD programme for teachers with different levels of experience. ETSA offers courses for NQTs, NQT+1, classroom practitioners, middle leaders and senior leaders covering a variety of subjects and criteria.
Our very experienced Specialist Leaders in Education (SLE) work alongside other schools to improve and maintain teaching and learning in England. Our SLEs specialise in a host of subjects, for example: Religious Education, Mathematics, English, Music and PE.
About the accredited body
St. Mary’s University are a Catholic university that we work very closely with. Both organisations have foundations based in the Gospel Values and train teachers in catholic settings.
Student’s do not have to be catholic to be accepted by this provider but should show an empathy towards the faith.
