About the course
This course offers the candidate in-school training over the course of one academic year. The candidate is able to train with children of different ages and can choose a Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 training programme.
The course consists of weekly observations by a school based mentor (SBM) and observations by an e-Qualitas representative a few times a term.
The candidate will need to build a portfolio of evidence to meet the Teaching Standards throughout the year. The candidate will have the opportunity to train for a period of time in a different school setting and a different Key Stage.
Identify the age range you think you would like to focus on during the training
The options are:
• Ages 3 to 7 ie Nursery and Reception (Early Years) and Years 1 and 2 (Key Stage 1)
• Ages 5 to 9 ie Years 1 to 4 inclusive (Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2)
• Ages 7 to 11 ie Years 3 to 6 inclusive (Key Stage 2)
Visiting primary schools will give you an insight into the teacher’s role, and help you decide whether you are more suited to teaching the younger or the older pupils. A good choice is the middle age range ie Years 1 to 4 inclusive, as you have to know about Early Years and about upper Key Stage 2 although during your training you concentrate on teaching Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2.
You are asked to plan and teach a half hour lesson with a story focus in a class. As part of this, you will be asked to provide a lesson plan for the session and copies of resources you will use for the children’s activities.

• Writing activity
• Approximately 45 minutes interview
Portfolio of evidence
You will be asked to bring with you to the interview a small portfolio of evidence to reflect upon your practice in school. When collating this, you should think about a range of activities you will have completed with children to show your skills as a potential teacher.
How school placements work
The candidate will be placed at one of our schools in the alliance. They will spend the first half term working in a class with their school based mentor before moving to another year group for the second half term.
From January to February half term, the candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in a different school in the alliance.
The candidate will then return back to the host school and continue their experience in a different year group than one they have previously worked in. Finally, the candidate will return back to the original class they began their school based training in to consolidate learning for the final term.

2.2 degree or higher
A* - C grade (or equivalent) at GCSE in English, Mathematics and Science.
About the training provider
The Emmaus Teaching School Alliance (ETSA) began in 2014 and is based in Wallington, Greater London. The teaching school is part of the Federation of St. Elphege’s and Regina Coeli Catholic Schools and is designated to St. Elphege’s RC Infant School.
ETSA aims to improve teaching and learning in all areas of the primary curriculum, working tirelessly to stay at the forefront of government initiatives and pilot schemes. The teaching school focuses on three key areas: Initial Teacher Training (ITT), Continued Professional Development (CPD) and School to School Support (StSS).
ITT enables graduates to become qualified teachers through a variety of different routes such as School Direct, Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) placements and Bachelor of Education (Bed) placements. The Alliance offer tailored support for each individual candidate.
All student teachers that have been trained at ETSA have completed the course graded good or outstanding and have been employed immediately.
Working alongside our alliance partners, we have created a robust and exciting CPD programme for teachers with different levels of experience. ETSA offers courses for NQTs, NQT+1, classroom practitioners, middle leaders and senior leaders covering a variety of subjects and criteria.
Our very experienced Specialist Leaders in Education (SLE) work alongside other schools to improve and maintain teaching and learning in England. Our SLEs specialise in a host of subjects, for example: Religious Education, Mathematics, English, Music and PE.
About the accredited body
e-Qualitas are a very 'hands-on' provider offering training days for students throughout their training year. The Emmaus Teaching School Alliance has a very strong working relationship with e-Qualitas and have been using this provider for many years.
Representatives visit the student teachers on a regular basis within the classroom setting and work alongside the Student Liaison Officer to ensure our student teachers are on task and successfully complete the course.
