Course summary

Our Primary PGCE with QTS programme is run in partnership with the University of Cumbria. We believe in providing you with a rich and broad experience of school contexts. This allows you to observe, practice and reflect on a variety of contrasting practice. As well as our school led training, you will undertake two 30-credit masters level modules to gain your PGCE. These modules are practically focused and designed to allow you to focus on your priorities and interests as you develop your teaching skills. You will complete three written assignments, one of which will be formative to support your academic development. The modules are taught by our University of Cumbria colleagues who work very closely with our programme. As a result you will be well equipped to move forward into your early teaching career.

School placements

We are a large alliance of local schools offering both assessed placements and school led training. All schools have a trained mentor who will be responsible for supporting your development. You will spend 3 days per week in your placement schools and 2 days per week in collaborative training experiences.

You will be expected to travel to school placements and school led training days which run in a range of our Primary schools. As a result you access a range of different and contrasting schools across the year.

The assessed aspects of our programme provide you with both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 opportunities. You will complete three assessed placements which increase in length over the course.

About the training provider

The Carlisle School Direct alliance provide ‘hands on’ training for both Primary and Secondary student teachers. The schools forming Carlisle School Direct have come together to support our trainees with the knowledge and skills essential to develop the future learning and achievement of young people across Carlisle and the surrounding areas.

Built around a close partnership between an alliance of leading schools, Carlisle School Direct offers an exciting way to ‘learn to teach by teaching’ that covers every classroom situation: from small rural schools to the area’s largest. Our programme offers Masters level credits as part of the PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will receive excellent school-based practice and academic input to support your journey.

Developed in close association with the University of Cumbria, one of the largest providers of Teacher training in the country and Carlisle’s Trinity School, the alliance provides a real insight into the reality of the profession. We take pride in our personal approach and offer an exciting programme which allows you to grow your teacher identity.

We have consistently achieved ‘good’ or better outcomes for our student teachers with a high percentage gaining employment locally: over 90% of our Primary and Secondary trainees secured employment in 2019.

Interview process

The interviews are held in our lead Primary school (Stanwix Primary) and are led by members of our programme team and school staff from across the alliance.

Note: Due to COVID-19 restrictions interviews may be held online

International candidates

You’ll need the right to study in the UK. You already have this if, for example, you:

  • are an Irish citizen
  • have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (you may still be able to apply)
  • have indefinite leave to remain in the UK

If you do not already have the right to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa. The main visa for fee-paying courses (those that you have to pay for) is the Student visa.

To apply for a Student visa, you’ll need to be sponsored by your training provider.

Sponsorship is not available for this course.

If you need a visa, filter your course search to find courses with visa sponsorship.

Alternatively, check if you’re eligible for a different type of visa, such as a Graduate or Family visa, that allows you to train to be a teacher without being sponsored.

International qualifications

If your qualifications come from a non-UK institution, we may want to see a ‘statement of comparability’ from UK ENIC. This will show us how they compare to UK qualifications.

You can call Get Into Teaching on 0800 389 2500 for:

  • guidance on the UK equivalents of your qualifications
  • a free statement of comparability once you’ve submitted your application (if we ask you for this)

Training with disabilities and other needs

All our students have access to the University of Cumbria’s support systems as well as that offered within our own alliance of schools. As a distance learner you can access support online or our location in allows easy on campus access too.
