A postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) with qualified teacher status (QTS) will allow you to teach in state schools in England and may allow you to teach in other parts of the UK.

It may also allow you to teach overseas, though you should always check what qualifications are needed in the country you’d like to teach in.

Many PGCE courses include credits that count toward a Master’s degree.

About the course

School Direct is an innovative route into teaching which enables schools to take a leading role in Initial Teacher Training through working in partnership with accredited ITT provider, Birmingham City University. The School Direct route into teaching is led by a lead School, working individually, or as part of a network of schools in partnership with an accredited teacher training institution.

Through Birmingham City University the School Direct Part time route is a two year course running across two days each week (Thursday and Friday) leading to a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status for primary and secondary trainees.

Trainees will study and work in schools within the network and the University, and their learning will be supported by teachers, mentors and University tutors from across the partnership. School Direct is a way of schools growing their own teachers and future leaders, so from the beginning of the programme trainees become part of a network of schools.(https://www.ryders-hayes.co.uk)

How school placements work

The programme echoes the One year full time route in content. Including; School based placements, Professional studies and assignments.

School based placements take place across two different schools;

  • Host school (with a block placement of two full weeks in June of the first year and a block placement of four weeks in June in the second year).
  • Second placement in the second year of study in a different school.

  • Training will be delivered in a diverse range of educational settings, including regular training at Ryders Hayes from expert facilitators, providing an outstanding ‘hands-on’ school-based experience. A bespoke training package for each trainee, including additional support in specialist subjects, promotes access to all aspects of school life.

All trainees must initially meet the standards for entry to the ITT programme as well as criteria set by The Partnership, which include having;

  • a 2:2 degree or above
  • English, Maths and Science GCSE – grade C/ 4 and above (or equivalent)
  • meaningful experience across the primary key stages
  • ability to travel between partner schools and BCU

About the training provider

Ryders Hayes School was one of the first Teaching Schools in the country, gaining the status in 2011. We are a National Teaching School with a strong culture of staff development and have joined forces with other local good and outstanding schools to create a strong and diverse Teaching School Alliance offering added value to the training experience.

The Ryders Hayes Partnership strongly believes in creating a ‘best fit’ between the host school and the School Direct trainee, in the belief that they are one of the staff team and a potential employee. Carefully planned induction and expert mentoring are key to our trainees success.

Training will be delivered by the lead school from expert facilitators, providing an outstanding ‘hands-on’ school-based experience. A bespoke training package for each trainee, including additional support in specialist subjects, promotes access to all aspects of school life.

Where suitable vacancies arise, an offer of employment at the end of the training will be made by the host school, or assistance given with gainful employment within its alliance of schools. We have extremely high employment rate for our trainees.

Our School Direct trainees feel like members of staff; with support from their peers; the staff and University team; have weekly school practice in their school; and find themselves positioned at the forefront of education, well prepared as much sought after and highly employable teachers.

About the accredited body

We at Ryders Hayes, as lead school, are in our seventh year of School Direct, working alongside Birmingham City University (BCU) as our chosen accredited ITT provider. We have over fifteen schools, including Ryders Hayes, in our Partnership.

The Routes

There are two School Direct (SD) routes – 1.School Direct Training Programme (tuition fees/training route) – funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee, (either directly or with a Student Loan Company (SLC) loan).
