About the course

This course leads to QTS a PGCE and Masters Credits.

You will be trained in a highly supportive, creative, inspirational environment where you will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to deliver high quality teaching and learning. TVTSA schools are committed to Initial Teacher Training and have formed a steering group with partner schools to quality assure and develop the course. The Loughborough school led PGCE course trains individuals to teach the 11-18 age range. It is formally registered with the Department for Education as an 11-16 QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) course with post-16 enhancement. In effect, this means that all individuals on the PGCE course will experience teaching the 11-16 curriculum as well as post-16, and will be qualified to take up teaching posts in all secondary schools covering the 11-18 age range.

Our course will help you to:

  • learn how to teach and relate to young people in a variety of learning situations;
  • develop the ability to plan sequences of lessons, and to teach and manage pupils effectively;
  • gain the confidence and competence to undertake your full role as a teacher within a secondary school;
  • develop sufficient knowledge and understanding of educational issues to be able to contribute effectively to the highest standards of teaching and learning, and to whole school improvement.

Alongside teaching experience in schools, you will undertake two other elements within the course: 1.Subject Methods courses in which you learn to teach your chosen subject (Physical Education or Mathematics). 2.General Professional Studies through which you come to understand the framework of the education system and how to contribute professionally to the wider role of the teacher responsible for the personal, social and health education of pupils.’

School placements

The course lasts 36 weeks and will give you teaching experience in two different secondary schools. Two thirds of the course is spent in schools where you will have the support and guidance of experienced teachers. For the rest of the time, you will work in the university with tutors and teachers who prepare you for your school experience, and guide you in making the important links between the theoretical and practical components of the course.

This is broken down into a block of time at University, 10 weeks in placement school 1, back to university, 11 weeks in placement school 2, finally back into university.

TVTSA also guarantee all trainees in schools have a Thursday afternoon off timetable, this is to be used by the trainee for

  • Attending a “wider context programme” which is delivered by the experts within our schools with sessions ranging from behaviour management to marking and assessment.
  • Attending alternative setting experiences organised by TVTSA at a special school, a behaviour referral unit, and an English as an additional language environment.
  • Completing research and gathering evidence to complete the PGCE assignments
  • Networking with the rest of the TVTSA trainees.

You will be able to select one of your placement schools through the application process, by the time that you are invited to interview, we will have selected a diverse placement to compliment the first using TVTSA schools based on your address.

Entry requirements

Qualifications needed

Applicants must hold a UK degree or equivalent qualification, at a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2 level no other degree levels will be considered.

This must be in, or closely related to your proposed teaching subject. We would expect that at least 50% of your degree is directly relevant to the National Curriculum subject you intend to teach.

Candidates require a GCSE C or 4 grade in Maths and English. We will also accept an approved equivalent qualification.

You can apply for the course not meeting these requirements, but you must obtain them before the course starts.

Successful candidates will be hardworking, driven and motivated as well as being dedicated to safeguarding and the welfare of our pupils. They need to be committed to helping our students progress to the best of their ability and must fully embrace the ethos of the schools they work in.

Other requirements

Candidates that can discuss experience of working with young people, or supporting, coaching adults in the workplace, sporting environment or clubs would have an advantage. As would candidates who can show the qualities they have and how these could be transferred into the work place.

Fees and financial support

The course fees for UK students in 2021 to 2022 are £9,250.

The fee for UK and EU students is £9250.00 which is the standard rate for postgraduate courses.

Trainees are entitled to the same financial support as trainees on other postgraduate teacher training courses

Those from the UK and the EU are eligible for student loans to cover tuition fees and maintenance.

Bursaries are available from the National College for Teaching and Leadership in priority subject areas, this is dependent on your degree level and the subject you wish to teach and the information can be found from the DfE.

Trent Valley Teaching School Alliance TVTSA has been successfully running school direct programmes across primary and secondary phases in many schools and academies over since 2012. Some of our original cohort are now mentors for the current school direct trainees. The employment rate for our trainees is extremely high, with over half of each cohort being recruited directly into TVTSA partner schools.

Tuxford Academy is an Ofsted outstanding academy as well as a designated OLEVI centre of excellence is the lead school for TVTSA. It is based in North Nottinghamshire and is a very popular rural school. TVTSA have a number of secondary schools and over 35 primary schools in the alliance and these are all quality assured by TVTSA and are located in and around Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

We pride ourselves on a personal, tailored approach. We are a small team and this enables us to get to know you as individuals and support your varying needs. We allow you to select your school of choice for your training year as well as interviewing you in that school, allowing you to build relationships early on, before training even starts. About the accredited body

Loughborough has a long and successful tradition in training teachers in Mathematics and P.E. Our trainees are in demand for teaching posts throughout the UK and beyond. Many past students now hold positions of authority and responsibility throughout the educational world. Our course will help trainees learn how to teach and relate to young people in a variety of learning situations, acquire techniques to plan lessons, teach and manage pupils effectively, develop the confidence and competence to undertake a full role as a member of secondary school staff and develop sufficient knowledge and understanding of educational issues.

Interview process

As this course is run in partnership between TVTSA and Loughborough University, two interviews are required.

The Loughborough Interview will occur at the University*. The panel will consist of PGCE university staff and teaching members of our partnership schools, and will establish the extent at which you are likely to meet the academic requirements of the programme, your commitment and passion for your chosen subject or phase, and the aptitude you have for teaching

The TVTSA Interview will take place at the school/academy* and is normally run within two hours and gives candidates a good opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school and the members of staff you will go onto work with. It will consist of a pupil panel, a 20 minute teaching exercise, and a formal interview with TVTSA and members of the Maths faculty.

Both parties discuss the outcome of the interview before a place is offered.

All of the schools are accessible by car, many of the partnership schools are based near major towns and cities and so can be accessed by public transport.
